Page weight without the demo content
Import the demo and the homepage is 4 MB. Strip it to your own content and a good theme drops below 1 MB; a bad one still loads six sliders and four icon fonts you never use.
Method
A theme costs sixty dollars once and costs you maintenance for years. These are the checks that predict the second number, in the order they usually fail.
The first thing we do with any theme is import the demo, then delete it. What is left is what your client site will actually be: your posts, your images, your two plugins. A well-built theme looks quiet and deliberate at that point. A badly built one looks broken, because its design lived in the demo content rather than in the theme.
Measure the homepage twice — once with the demo, once stripped. The gap tells you how much of the "premium" you are actually buying.
Most premium themes ship with a builder. Deactivate it and reload. If your layouts collapse into unrendered shortcodes, you have not bought a theme; you have rented a layout that only exists while the licence is active. That is a defensible trade if you know you are making it, and a nasty surprise three years later if you do not.
The good compromise, and the one we mark highest: templates that render from the theme itself, with the builder available for landing pages rather than load-bearing for the whole site.
Speed scores measure a moment on a tuned server. Query count measures a habit. Install a query monitor on an empty site, load the homepage with nine posts and look at the number. Thirty to sixty is normal. Two hundred and upward means the theme is fetching the same options repeatedly, and no amount of caching will save you on the day your cache is cold and traffic is not.
Star ratings age badly; changelogs do not. What we look for is rhythm — small releases every few weeks, security notes written plainly, and a version number that moved after the last WordPress major release. What we avoid is the pattern of a large rewrite followed by silence, which usually means the author moved on to selling the next theme.
Put the mouse down and use the keyboard. Can you reach the menu, open the submenu, close a modal? Is there a visible focus ring? Then check heading order and the contrast of the accent colour against its background. This is where expensive themes lose most often, and it is the easiest thing for an author to fix once someone points it out.
Not "how do I change a colour" — something that exposes a genuine limitation you found while testing. The reply tells you whether there is a developer behind the product or a ticket queue. We quote the answer in the review, in full, with the date.
A theme demo runs on tuned hosting, with images the author picked and a database the author built. Your site will not. These are the seven things we check, in the order they tend to go wrong.
Import the demo and the homepage is 4 MB. Strip it to your own content and a good theme drops below 1 MB; a bad one still loads six sliders and four icon fonts you never use.
Switch off the page builder and see what remains. If the layout collapses into shortcodes, the theme is not a theme, it is a hostage situation with a licence key.
We read the last two years of changelog. Steady small releases beat a big rewrite followed by eighteen months of silence, whatever the star rating says.
Some themes issue 300 queries to render a homepage with nine posts. That is invisible on a demo and painful on shared hosting at 200 concurrent visitors.
Tab through the menu, check heading order, measure contrast on the accent colour. Premium price tags rarely include a focus ring.
We send one real question about a genuine limitation. The answer tells you more about the next two years than any review ever will.
Three outcomes, no scores out of ten. A number invites arguments about decimals; a sentence forces us to say what we mean.
| Verdict | What it means | What we had to see |
|---|---|---|
| Build on it | Safe for a client site you will still maintain in three years. | Passes all seven checks, ships updates, and degrades gracefully without the builder. |
| Fine, with conditions | Good work, but something needs saying out loud before you buy. | Passes the weight and update checks; fails one thing you can live with if you know about it. |
| Walk away | The demo is the best it will ever look. | Abandoned changelog, or a layout that only exists inside the builder. |
The errors every theme buyer meets eventually, written out properly: what the limit actually does, where to change it, and which fix your host will silently override.
The white screen halfway through a demo import. Four places set that limit and they override each other in a fixed order — change the wrong one and nothing happens.
GuideYou press save, the page reloads, half your settings are gone and there is no error. That is max_input_vars truncating the POST, and it has nothing to do with the theme.
Static templates outlived the frameworks that were supposed to replace them. What to check in the markup before you commit a client project to one.
ExplainerNo theme gets a verdict here before it has run for at least ninety days. The test install has to stay online all that time, often on a small machine in a home office, loading the homepage, logging queries and taking each WordPress update as it ships. A computer that stays on for ninety days draws electricity in every one of those hours.
What each hour costs depends on the price per kWh set by the energy contract. Milieu Centraal separates three contract types, with the share of Dutch households on each in December 2025:
| Contract | Price per kWh | Households |
|---|---|---|
| Vast | Unchanged until the end of a one, two or three year term | 54% |
| Variabel | Can change every six months, every quarter or every month | 39% |
| Dynamisch | Electricity moves per hour or per quarter hour | 7% |
For a test machine that runs around the clock, the first row keeps its running cost known in advance. The row is chosen as the contractvorm when you sign with a supplier, and the Dutch page below covers that signing step in full: energiecontract afsluiten.
Vul uw adres in.
| Looptijd | 1, 2 of 3 jaar | Maandelijks opzegbaar | Maandelijks opzegbaar |
| Eerder opzeggen | Opzegvergoeding (opzegboete) mogelijk | Geen opzegvergoeding | Geen opzegvergoeding |
